Until now, domain names under .at had to consist of at least three characters. This Directive is now being amended. This means that almost 5,000 one- and two-digit domains will be allocated. The phased introduction will begin on August 29, 2016, and the one- and two-digit .at-domains will be technically reachable from December 6, 2016.
08/29/2016-09/23/2016: Sunrise phase for trademark owners
During this period, trademark owners can file their claim to a domain. The trademark must have been registered before 1 July 2015 and enjoy a protective effect in Austria. A processing fee is due for this. If there is only one valid registration for a domain, it will be assigned to the applicant at a fixed price. If there are several valid registrations, the domain will be auctioned from October 10-21, 2016 among the eligible applicants.
from 11/07/2016: Public Auction
All domains that were not allocated in the sunrise phase are put up for public online auction. Here everyone can bid, the best bidder wins the bidding.
from 12/06/2016: Technical availability and free sale
Those domains that have not yet been registered after the public auction can be freely allocated according to the first come first serve principle and can be registered at the usual conditions via registrars or directly via nic.at. December 6, 2016 is also the deadline on which all short domains assigned until then will be registered in the .at zone and thus technically accessible.
