Up to now, interested parties can only register domains under the various second-level domains (SLD) such as .com.au, gov.au or others.
The UK and New Zealand have already liberalised their conditions for the registration of domains in 2014. In the meantime, domains can be registered directly under .uk or nz. The demand for the shorter .uk domains has grown on average by 13% in the last months, according to the New Zealand TLD .nz even by 25%.
With these growth rates, it is therefore not surprising that Australia is also considering liberalising the conditions for the registration of domains. At present, the registry is collecting opinions from the public by June 1, 2015 in order to include them in its decision on liberalization. Whether it will be possible in the future to register domains directly under .au and when a decision will be made is currently not known.
