New Zealand liberalizes .nz domains from September 30, 2014 - What do domain owners have to consider?

After the top-level domain (TLD) .uk was liberalized, New Zealand is now following this trend and will soon offer the possibility to register domains directly under the TLD .nz from September 30, 2014. Until now, domains could only be registered under a second level domain (SLD) such as .co.nz or .org.nz.

During liberalization, domain owners of existing domains are preferred by the registry in New Zealand and have 6 months time to register their domains directly under the TLD .nz. According to current information, the shorter version .nz supplements the existing domain extensions.

The registry has assigned existing domains as follows, so that interested parties can already check at www.123domain.eu what status their desired domains have and what else can be done to register them directly under the TLD .nz:

Preferred registration or reservation for domain possible ("Will be PRR")
The domain owner of the corresponding existing domain will receive preferential treatment and can decide until March 30, 2015 either to register the domain under the short TLD .nz or to reserve it free of charge for up to two years.

If there is no interest in the short TLD .nz, nothing more needs to be done and the domain will be released for registration by March 30, 2015 for other interested parties.

Domain is available ("Will be available")
A domain with this status can be registered as of September 30, 2014. As usual, the principle "first come - first served" applies here.

Domain collides ("Will be conflicted")
The same domain name exists under at least two SLDs, for example .co.nz and org.nz. For example, the domain owners of a conflicting domain name may indicate whether they are interested in registering directly under .nz or not. If several parties are interested, they can try to reach an agreement, in case of doubt with the help of a commission of the registry.
In case of non-agreement it can even go so far that the domain may not be registered under the TLD .nz.

Registration is prohibited ("Will be prohibited")
This domain cannot be registered directly under the TLD .nz.

Registered domains remain unaffected by the liberalisation. Domain owners will receive preferential treatment until March 30, 2015.

Domain owners of domains under the current SLDs in New Zealand can use www.123domain.eu to check the status of their desired domains and arrange for everything else to be registered. Other interested parties interested in registering their desired domains under the TLD .nz can also check whether they can be registered at the start of liberalisation on September 30, 2014 or later.
